A piece of work done for Luscious International
concept for the palace by Vincent Ward and Mike Worrall

As concept designers your brief is to create a single piece of character design based upon ONE of the following characters: Prince Jason, Hercules or Talos. These character design piece would be used as part of a pitch package to generate interest in an exciting cinematic reinvention of Jason and the Argonauts. Your reinvention does not need to conform exactly to the original story, but should still reflect or parody the character descriptions and their role in the film. For example Jason is the Hero, Hercules a sidekick and Talos a supernatural adversary. You are also not tied to the original setting. Your Jason and the Argonauts could be in space; it could be historically accurate, or stylized fantasy like 300. Even the genre of film is open; it could be 2D children’s film or 3D animation, swash-buckling live action, or even a comedy where say Hercules may in fact be a scrawny weakling rather than a buff superman.

“Life is beautiful” is a digital painting mainly made using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and bit of Corel Painter 3. This illustration was purchased from my friend as a Christmas gift to her daughter Jordan. Jordy is a very nice little lady so I wanted to make something really special for her. The dragon theme is much exploited but always exciting. There are tons of great inspirational dragon paintings from the time of Leonardo up to the digital era so I started a research. Usually the research phase costs me very long time but it’s thankful. Along with the research I make rough sketches until the idea and composition “come”. At the beginning I decided to create a battle dragon in classic fantasy environment (because of the books, Jordy reads) but then I realized that it’s too “dark” for a girl and started again with more "girlish" dragon. The next step was to observe existing animals similar to the dragon. The artist always needs to imagine the story behind the characters he creates, their natural habitats, feelings and wills, ethnic and cultural identity if necessary. That’s how he builds presumable picture of no existing things. Class Reptilia are the animals I used for part of the concept especially the Squamata ones. At the same time I transformed the body using the combination of the elegance and charm of the Arabian horses and the power and energy of the Terrier dog’s family. In the animal world the body color usually comes from pigments - self produced or from the food and it has defense (mimicry, camouflage), reproduction, etc. purposes. I created different scale brushes depending on the size and the position they fit onto the body. Some of the scale complexes I manipulated using the Transform options( rotate, skew, warp, perspective) in Photoshop where is possible to save time. The rest of the body is done with PS preset brushes – I only changed their style, hardness, dynamics. The background is done mainly in Painter – I like some of the artistic tools this software has – palette knife, oils, airbrushes. Looking for references I found the beautiful photo taken from Dani Simmonds. Some of the blossoms I painted, another ones I took from the photo and then over painted because I wanted more realistic look. At the very end I tried something like “tilt shift faking” to increase the realism of the miniature dragon. I did everything in the week before Christmas in my free time – sum of 10 -12 hours happy drawing. So this is the final - just another wonderful morning under the sun. Life is beautiful, enjoy it!
